Description |
An investigation on “Performance of rice fallow maize under zero tillage conditions” was conduted during rabi 2006-’07 at Student’s Farm, College of Agriculture, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The experiment was conducted on a sandy loam soil of medium fertility with nine treatments including tillage practices, sowing methods and weed control measures in randomized block design with three replications. Initial and final plant stand of maize was higher under zero tillage conditions than in conventional planting. Random sowing with appropriate weed control measures under zero tillage conditions recorded higher initial and final plant stand. Plant height at different crop growth periods was higher and comparable in conventional planting and integrated weed control treatment involving application of paraquat and atrazine as pre and post-emergence followed by a hand weeding at 30 DAS in line sown zero till crop. Number of green leaves plant-1 and LAI were higher at 60 DAS which thereafter declined gradually towards maturity. Maximum number of leaves plant-1and LAI were registered by conventional planting and line sown zero till treatment applied with paraquat and atrazine followed by a hand weeding at 30 DAS. Dry matter accumulation of maize increased continuously upto maturity. Consequent to taller plants, more number of leaves plant-1 and higher LAI, dry matter production was comparatively higher in conventional planting and line sown zero tillage treatment applied with two compatible herbicides as pre and postemergence followed by a hand weeding at 30 DAS. Absence of weed control in either random or line sowings under zero tillage conditions has delayed silking by two days as compared to conventional planting and zero tillage weed control treatments. Number of cobs plant-1 remained stable for all the treatments. Cob weight was higher both in conventional planting and line sown zero till treatment with integrated weed control. Shelling percentage ranged from 65 to 73 in conventional planting and zero till line and random sowings applied with two compatible herbicides either alone or with a follow-up hand weeding at 30 DAS. However, 100 grain weights did not show any variation among the treatments. Favourable growth characters and yield attributes had resulted in higher grain and stover yields in conventional planting and line sown zero till treatment involving application of paraquat as pre-emergence and atrazine as post-emergence followed by a hand weeding at 30 DAS. Harvest index values never reached more than 50 percent. However, random sowing under zero tillage conditions without any weed control measures has recorded highest harvest index value of 41 percent. Better control of weeds has resulted in lower weed dry weights in conventional planting and also in zero tillage random and line sown treatments involving application of paraquat and atrazine either alone or with a follow-up hand weeding at 30 DAS. Line sowing with integrated weed control under zero tillage conditions was found best with lowest weed index value. Application of paraquat as pre-emergence and atrazine as post-emergence either alone or with a follow-up herbicide at 30 DAS registered higher and similar weed control efficiencies than application of paraquat alone under zero tillage conditions. Gross returns from conventional planting method was highest. On the otherhand, net returns and benefit-cost ratio were higher in line sown zero till treatment applied with two compatible herbicides followed by a hand weeding at 30 DAS. |
