Description |
An experiment entitled “Effect of land configuration, soil conditioner and fertilizer on greater yam (Dioscorea alata L.) cv. Local Round” was conducted on clayey soil of the Regional Horticultural Research Station, Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari during kharif/rabi seasons of 2007-08 and 2008-09. Eighteen treatment combinations of three land configurations (L1 - flat bed, L2 - ridge and furrow as well as L3 - raised bed), three soil conditioner (S1 - no FYM, S2 - FYM @ 10 t/ha and S3 - FYM @ 20 t/ha) and two fertilizer (F1 - 100 % RDF and F2 - 75 % RDF) treatments were tried in split plot design with three replications. Ridge and furrow, FYM @ 20 t/ha and 100 % RDF treatments showed more or less significantly favourable effect on growth, yield attributes and yield of greater yam in terms of days to sprouting, vine length, number of tillers per plant, fresh and dry plant weight, tuber length and girth, number of tubers per plant, tuber weight, yield per plant, yield per hectare, tuber dry weight as well as harvest index over rest of the respective treatments. There was increase in tuber yield advantage of 23.13 and 16.50 per cent due to ridge and furrow over flat bed and raised bed method of planting, respectively; 15.76 and 6.24 per cent due to application of FYM @ 20 t/ha over no FYM and FYM @ 10 t/ha, respectively and 9.23 per cent as a result of application of 100 % RDF over 75 % RDF treatment. Vigorous growth in respect of number of tillers per plant and length, girth, fresh weight and dry weight of tuber were found higher due to interaction effect of L2S3 and L2F1. Consequently these treatments gave higher tuber yield per plant as well as per hectare. Better quality tubers of greater yam in respect of carbohydrate, starch and total soluble sugar were obtained due to ridge and furrow planting method, application of FYM @ 20 t/ha and 100 % RDF, individually. During storage, lower weight loss was also observed in the above treatment up to three and half month of storage periods. Interaction of ridge and furrow planting method and application of FYM @ 20 t/ha (L2S3) reported lower weight loss in greater yam tuber after three and half month of storage periods. Higher content in plant was observed in respect to N and K2O due to L1; P2O5 under S3; Fe Mn, Zn and Cu under L2 treatment. Similarly, in tuber, significantly higher content was noted in respect to N and P2O5 due to S3 and F1 as well as K2O, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu due to L2 treatment. Higher total uptake was reported in respect to N, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu due to ridge and furrow planting method (L2) as well as P2O5 and K2O due to application of FYM @ 20 t/ha (S3). Physical properties of soil were slightly improved over their initial values under the treatments ridge and furrow, FYM @ 20 t/ha and 100 % RDF and the same was true for the fertility status of the soil. The organic C, available N, P2O5, K2O, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu content of soil was not affected significantly due to land configuration, soil conditioner and fertilizer treatments, except available N and P2O5 as well as P2O5 content in soil which was found significantly higher under treatment of FYM @ 20 t/ha and 100 % RDF, respectively. The treatments ridge and furrow, FYM @ 20 t/ha and 100 % RDF recorded maximum net realization of Rs. 293933, 268466 and 264105 /ha with their corresponding values of benefit: cost ratio being 2.42, 2.12 and 2.17, while treatment combination ridge and furrow x FYM @ 20 t/ha x 100 % RDF reported maximum net realization of Rs. 370795/ha with benefit: cost ratio of 2.92. From the above results, it can be concluded that the greater yam crop should be grown on ridge and furrow along with application of 20 t FYM/ha and 100 % RDF to get higher yield of better quality tuber which also give higher net realization and sustain soil fertility |
