Description The “Flowering and fruiting behavior with respect of
nutrients and carbohydrate status in mango cv. Alphonso and Kesar”
was carried out at Block No. -1 and Plot No. – 3 B during the year
2010-11 and 2011-12 at Agriculture Experimental Station, Navsari
Agricultural University, Paria, Dist. - Valsad (Gujarat). Decrease in
level of nitrogen during October and November in both the cultivars
indicated the use of leaf nitrogen during fruit bud differentiation.
Then it continuously decreased up to 1st March after flowering in
both the cultivars in both the years, which was fruit development
period. Increasing trend of phosphorus content in leaves found in
October and November, the fruit bud differentiation stage, then
again it started to decline during fruit set and fruit development.
Similar trend was found in Alphonso and Kesar cultivars during both
the years. Rapid decrease of potassium content was observed in
leaves of both the cultivars at initial stage and decrease or stability
in the potassium content after flowering, fruit set and fruit growth.
Carbohydrate level was increased in Alphonso on 1 st November in
both the years; while, in Kesar it was 1st December and 1st November
in 2010-11 and 2011-12, respectively, carbohydrate level depleted
after flowering, at fruit set and development stage in Alphonso and
Kesar.
Average number of vegetative shoots per twenty twigs
were found higher during both the year indicating less flowering
shoot in Alphonso. While in Kesar, flowering shoots were higher
compared to Alphonso. Flowering was initiated during first year in
first week of December and it took 30-40 days to full bloom in both
the cultivars. In contrast, flowering started in January in both the
cultivars and showed full bloom in about 30 days during second
year. The entire yield contributing characters and yield recorded
higher in 2011-12 than 2010-11, while, values for all these characters
was higher in Kesar than Alphonso except the number of fruits
harvested per tree.
Most of the physical parameters found higher in second
year in both cultivars but all the physical parameter s was found
better in Kesar than Alphonso. Chemical parameters were observed
better in second year compared to first year in both the cultivars.
Photosynthesis rate (Pn) (μmole m-2s-1) in leaves of mango cv.
Alphonso as well as Kesar was decreased along with progress in the
sampling period (starting from July) till the completion of flowering.
Decrease in stomatal conductance (gs) (mole m-2s-1) and internal CO2
concentration (ppm) of leaves and increased in leaf temperature ( 0C)
was observed during the investigation period.
Most of the growth, flowering, yield, physical and
chemical parameters of fruit exerted positive correlation and was
positively influenced by leaf nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium,
carbohydrate, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance and internal
CO2 of leaf. In contrast, leaf temperature negatively correlated which
showed important role of leaf nutrients, carbohydrate and
physiological processes for fruit set and retention of fruit up to
maturity stage.
