Description A field experiment was conducted at Water Management Research Centre, Belvatagi
to study the effect of substitution of nitrogen to maize with different organic manures on
productivity, nutrients uptake and changes in soil properties of a Vertisol during kharif 2006-
07. Experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications and
consisted two levels of substitution of nitrogen at 25% and 50% of the recommended N to
maize with FYM, vermicompost, crop residue (maize) and green manuring (sunnhemp),
totaling nine treatment combinations.
Application of organic manures in combination with fertilizers differed significantly
among various treatments with respect to grain yield. The maximum grain yield of 72.40 q
per ha was realized with 100% RDF, which was on par with all the treatments with 50%
RDN + 50% N through various organics. The uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium,
sulphur, zinc and iron by maize increased significantly due to substitution of N with organics.
Application of vermicompost recorded higher uptake of these nutrients as compared to other
organic manures. The soil physical properties were improved due to 25% and 50%
substitution of N through different organics.
The available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, zinc and iron contents of soil
were significantly increased due to substitution of 25% and 50% N through organics. Protein
and starch contents of maize grains were increased significantly with conjunctive use of
organics and fertilizers over fertilizers alone. The highest B:C ratio of 2.67 was observed with
100% RDF followed by 50% RDN + 50% N through green manuring (2.10). The study
clearly showed that in maize crop, organic manures like vermicompost, FYM, green manures
and crop residue could be effectively used in combination with chemical fertilizers to benefit
the crop and improve soil health.
