Description The present study entitled “An Economic Analysis of jatropa cultivation
in Andhra Pradesh” was under taken to study costs and returns, and economic
viability aspects. From five districts, 11 Mandals and 13 villages having
maximum area under jatropa cultivation were purposively selected. In total thirty
jatropa cultivators were purposively selected. The sample data selected was
classified into establishment period (1st year) and maintaining period (2nd to 50th
year). Data from the selected respondents was collected with well-structured
schedule designed for the year 2005-2006. Conventional and project evaluation
techniques were employed to analyze the data.
The total labour employed to establish and maintain the jatropa
plantation during the entire life period was 4,366.52 mandays per hectare, out of
which intercultivation (33.48 per cent), manuring (28.62 per cent), harvesting
(18.82 per cent) and pruning took major share consuming 4,264.59 mandays
(16.68 per cent) respectively.
The commercial cost of cultivation i.e. (cost C) for the life span of
jatropa plantation was Rs.4, 07,551.82 per hectare. The gross and net incomes
realized for the entire life period were Rs.11,13,349.27 and Rs.5,41,126.750 per
hectare respectively.
The net present worth was as high as Rs.59, 341.16 at 12 per cent and Rs.8,
748.86 at 24 per cent. The B.C. ratio was 1.16 even at high discount rate of 24
per cent. The IRR was calculated at 30.3 per cent. All the measures indicated
the economic viability of jatropa cultivation.
