Description A field experiment entitled “Crop growth, productivity, profitability, quality and drought
tolerance behavior of groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) under various potassium application
schedules” was conducted during summer season of 2014 and 2015 at Agronomy Main
Research Farm, OUAT, Bhubaneswar. Eight different potassium application schedules i.e.
control with no NPK (T1), Farmers practice with 18, 46and 30 kg N, P2O5, and K2O ha-1 (T2),
Recommended dose of fertilizer i.e. 20, 40, 40 kg N:P2O5:K2O ha-1 (T3), RDF + 50%K as basal
(T4), RDF + 50%P + 100%K with all K as basal (T5), RDF with all K in 2 equal splits i.e. 50%
at sowing and 50% at flowering (T6), RDF + 50% P + 50% with all K in 2 equal splits (T7), RDF
+ 50%P + 100% with all K in 2 equal splits (T8) were tried in randomized block design (RBD)
with 3 replications. Groundnut cv. ‘Devi (ICGV 91114)’ was taken as test variety of the crop.
The soil of the experimental site was sandy loam with pH of 5.1, OC of 0.43%(Low), available N
of 204.5 kg ha-1(Low), available Bray’s available P of 20.0 kg ha-1(Med) and available K of
110.7 kg ha-1(Low).
Application of no fertilizers (control) to the crop recorded the minimum values of growth
parameters viz. plant height, branches/plant, LAI, dry matter accumulation and yield attributes
such as pods/plant, 100 kernel weight etc. Farmers practice recorded higher values of the
attributes than control for majority of parameters. Among K application schedules, three
schedules with application of all K as basal viz. recommended dose of fertilizers (RDF), RDF +
50% K and RDF + 50% P + 100% K recorded higher values of yield attributes as compared to
farmers practice. Three K application schedules involving application of all K in 2 equal splits at
sowing and flowering such as RDF, RDF + 50%P+50% K and RDF + 50% P + 100% K recorded
higher values of growth and yield parameters as compared to aforementioned three K
application schedules. Averaged over two seasons, withholding of fertilizers application gave the
minimum pod yield of 1375 kg ha-1 and oil yield of 361 kg ha-1. Farmers practice gave pod yield
of 1595 kg ha-1 and oil yield of 472 kg ha-1. Application of RDF with all K as basal gave the pod
yield and oil yield of 1600 kg ha-1 and 481 kg ha-1 respectively. The same dose of fertilizer with
split application of K gave a higher pod yield of 1839 kg ha-1 and oil yield of 593 kg ha-1.
Similarly, RDF + 50% P + 100% K with all K as basal gave pod yield and oil yield of 1741 kg
ha-1 and 567 kg ha-1 but the same fertilizer level with K in two equal splits gave the pod and oil
yield of 2266 kg ha-1 and 858 kg ha-1. Productivity of summer groundnut can be enhanced by 1.5
and 8.1%, respectively, by applying extra P2O5 + K2O dose of 0 +20 and 20 + 40 kg ha-1 over
the recommended dose. These two treatments can enhance net return by 36.6 and 38.5 % over
farmers practice (18+46+30 kg N+ P2O5+ K2O ha-1). On the whole, split application of K can
enhance the pod yield by 14.2% over applying whole K as basal. Recommended dose of fertilizer
with splitting of K application increased pod yield and net return by 7 % and 25 % over
application of same dose as basal. Similarly splitting of K in RDF +50% P+100 % K can enhance
pod yield, oil yield and net return by 18 %, by 40 and 53 %, respectively.
