Description |
A set of 62 G. arboreum L. and G. herbaceum L. genotypes including six GMS females, eight males and their 48 single F1 hybrids were sown at three locations in Gujarat viz., Surat, Bharuch and Hansot to study the magnitude of heterosis, combining ability and stability parameters in inter and intraspecific crosses of Asiatic cottons for 16 plant characters including seed cotton yield and its component characters following line x tester mating design. The experiment was conducted using randomized block design replicated thrice. Each plot consisted of single row, 4.5 m long spaced at 1.20m. Significant differences were observed among parents and hybrids indicating considerable genetic variation among these genotypes. Significant standard heterosis and high per se performance with regard to seed cotton yield and its components were recorded by 35N x 824 (intra arboreum); 4011 x G.Cot.17, 4011 x GShv 1012/90 (intra herbaceum); 378BK x 824, 4011 x 824,35N x G.Cot.17 and 8401 x G.Cot.17 (interspecific) in positive direction. The magnitude of heterosis was higher in interspecific crosses. Combining ability analysis revealed that both additive as well as non-additive effects were important in the inheritance of all the traits studied. However, magnitudes of variances due to SCA were comparatively larger than those of GCA for all the characters. Among the parents, 4011, 824, G.Cot.17 and 35N were good general combiners for majority of the traits, including seed cotton yield. The crosses viz., 378BK x 824, 35N x G.Cot.17, 8401 x G.Cot.17 (interspecific) and 4011 x GShv 1012/90 (intra herbaceum) showed higher order SCA effects for seed cotton yield and its component characters in both intra and interspecific crosses. Stability analysis revealed that environmental component was considerably higher than genotypes and genotype x environment components for all the characters. Both linear and non-linear components were important for most of the characters. However, larger magnitude of non-linear component for average boll weight, lint index and oil content indicated inability of predicting the performance of these genotypes across the environments. Looking to the overall performance, parental lines viz., 35N, 4011, 824 and G.Cot.17 were the best general combiners in both types of crosses. The most stable parent was 8401 for seed cotton yield. The cross 378BK x 824 was the top yielder with desirable stability. Among crosses viz., SRT GMS-1 x G.87-435 (intra arboreum), 378BK x 824 and 35N x G.Cot.17 (interspecific) showed comparatively stable performance. The comparative study of intra and interspecific crosses in the present material revealed higher magnitude of heterosis, gene effects and stability parameters in interspecific crosses. However, intraspecific crosses also shared significant heterosis, combining ability effects and better stability which indicated the possibility of utilizing intra-herbaceum/intraarboreum crosses for development of commercial hybrids using GMS system. |
