Description |
The present study was conducted in rice to evaluate the efficacy and dosage of commercial and laboratory grade GA3 on IR 58025 A, a popular female parental line for majority of rice hybrids developed in India. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with two spraying schedules as main treatments and six dosages of GA3 as sub treatments. The seed harvested from A-line was subjected to accelerated ageing for different durations to assess the influence of GA3 on seed storability. Analyses of variance indicated significant differences for plant height (cm), days to 50% flowering, number of productive tillers per hill, panicle exsertion (%), seed set (%) and single plant yield (g). The influence of GA3 on 100 seed weight and L/B ratio was meagre. The dosage of 90g GA3/ha in combination with 1% boric acid had synergistic and incremental influence on traits viz., plant height, panicle exsertion (%), seed set (%) and ultimately single plant yield particularly with the spraying schedule of 40:30:30% GA3 on 1st, 3rd and 5th day of 5% panicle emergence. Highest panicle exsertion of 78% and seed set of 48.6% were recorded in this combination, which has ultimately resulted in highest (6.48 g) single plant yield. The results indicated a marginal difference in the effect of laboratory grade GA3 and commercial grade GA3, which can be profitability exploited by the farmers, since commercial grade GA3 is available at a cheaper rate. However, application of GA3 was found to exercise a declining influence on seed quality parameters in seed lots subjected to accelerated ageing except electrical conductivity. This negative influence of GA3 could be attributed to irreversible changes in membrane dynamics and slow mobilization of energy reserves. Such a decline in these parameters was commensurate with higher electrical conductivity as a result of increased leachates under the influence of GA3 and accelerated ageing. However, the ill effect of GA3 on seed quality can be circumvented by disposing the hybrid seed in the following season due to high demand. |
