Description The study of stressful life events and behavioural problems on a random sample of
416 PUC students of science, commerce and arts selected from 5 colleges in Bidar city.
Stressful life events schedule and Revised Behavioural Problem Scale (Quay and Peterson,
1986) were used. The data were subjected to frequency, percentage, t-test and correlation
analyses. The results revealed that expectation of father and mother to follow strict schedule
in day to day activities by the student, argument between the mother and the student,
argument between the brother and student and sister and student, criticism of brothers,
experiencing financial problem, in love with a friend, having the problem of English
language, developing the problem of pimples and feeling tired, experiencing unnecessary
tension and fear were the first order stressors. Correspondingly, getting angry easily, telling
lie to protect their friends, violating rules and regulation, forgetting simple things easily,
wanted to be a child, doing new things in a new way and strange ideas come to their mind
were the first order behavioural problems. There was no significant difference between class
of the students on components of stressful life events and stressors, components of
behavioural problems and behavioural problems. But there was significant difference
between gender on components of stressful life events viz., family relations, peer relations,
academic stressors, overall stressors and on components of behavioural problem such as
conduct disorder, socialized aggression, attention problem, psychotic behaviour and
behavioural problems. As the stressful life events among the students increased the
behavioural problems had also increased significantly, thus the components of stressful life
events such as family relations, academic stressors, physical health and psychological
stressors had significantly contributed to behavioural problems.
