Description The present investigation entitled “Studies on effect of seedling age and transplant density on growth, yield and quality of Rabi onion in Chhattisgarh plains” was conducted at Research and Instructional Farm, Department of Horticulture, College of Agriculture, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (Chhattisgarh) during Rabi season of year 2012-13. The experiment was laid out in factorial randomized block design with three replications. The treatment consisted of twelve treatments of seedling age and transplant density viz; 30 days X 15x15 cm (S1D1), 30 days X 15x10 cm (S1D2), 30 days X 10x10 cm (S1D3), 40 days X 15x15 cm (S2D1), 40 days X 15x10 cm (S2D2), 40 days X 10x10 cm (S2D3), 50 days X 15x15 cm (S3D1), 50 days X 15x10 cm (S3D2), 50 days X 10x10 cm (S3D3), 60 days X 15x15 cm (S4D1), 60 days X 15x10 cm (S4D2), 60 days X 10x10 cm (S4D3). The different seedling age and transplant density exhibited significant influence on various growth, yield and yield attributing characters in the present study and their interaction was also found to be significantly affecting all these parameters. All the growth and yield characters significantly declined with delayed seedling age from 30 days to 60 days and advancement in transplant density (15x15, 15x10, 10x10 cm). The treatment S1 (30 days) with D1 (15x15 cm) significantly registered the highest performs in comparison to rest of the treatments.
Maximum plant height, number of leaves per plant, pseudostem length, polar diameter, total bulb yield, marketable bulb yield was recorded under S1D3 (30 days X 10x10 cm), pseudostem width, equatorial diameter, diameter:length ratio, weight of grade „A‟ bulbs, weight of double bulbs, average bulb weight, average bulb dry weight, bolting percentage was recorded under S1D1 (30 days X 15x15 cm), weight of grade „B‟ bulbs S3D3 (50 days X 10x10 cm), weight of grade „C‟ bulbs S4D3 (60 days X 10x10 cm),
