Induction of Oestrus in Postpartum Anoestrus Buffaloes with Lugol's Iodine and GnRH Treatments

Description “Induction of oestrus in Postpartum Anoestrus Buffaloes with Lugol‟s iodine and GnRH Treatments” was undertaken at Nirmal Dairy Farm, Khalasna, Nagpur. A total of 30 healthy Murrah postpartum true anoestrus buffaloes were selected and divided into 3 groups comparising 10 buffaloes in each group. 10 postpartum anoestrus buffaloes from Group I, treated with Lugol‟s iodine 20 ml I/U on -4 day , Inj. of GnRH (Receptal) 2.5 ml IM on “0” day and FTAI on 9th day and repeated insemination on 10th day. In Group II , 10 postpartum anoestrus buffaloes received Lugol‟s iodine 20 ml I/U on -4 day , Inj. of GnRH (Receptal) 2.5 ml I/M on “0” day, Inj. of GnRH (Receptal) 2.5 ml I/M on “9th” day and FTAI and repeated insemination on 10th day. Buffaloes in Control Group received no treatment but observed for oestrus till 90th day and naturally served. The buffaloes exhibited oestrus during the treatment period i.e. before 9th day (FTAI) were naturally served and recorded behavioural signs, treatment response interval and duration of oestrus of these buffaloes only. Out of 30 buffaloes 6 buffaloes showed behavioural signs in which 2 buffaloes (33.33%) showed Intense oestrus, 3 buffaloes (50%) showed Intermediate oestrus and one buffalo (16.66%) showed Weak oestrus. The average treatment response interval in treatment group was 6.33 days. The average duration of oestrus was 21 hrs irrespective of treatment and control groups. The conception rate in Group I and Group II was 30% (3/10) and 40% (4/10) respectively while in control group the conception rate was “0” %. The overall conception rate was 35% in postpartum anoestrus buffaloes.
In conclusion, Lugol‟s iodine may be used to replace the PGF2α in oestrus synchronization protocols such as Select synch, Ovsynch and Co synch leading to reduction in cost of oestrus induction.
