Description The objective of the study was to find out an ideal dose rate of detomidine as premedicant to ketamine-guaifenesin anaesthesia in cattle. 18 calves divided in 3 groups were administered with detomidine @ 10, 20 and 30 μg/kg b.wt in animals of group I, II and III, respectively. Anaesthesia was induced with a mixture of 2 mg ketamine and 50 mg guaifenesin/mL of 5% dextrose solution, and maintained up to 60 min. Results showed that the induction time and total dose of anaesthetics reduced as the dose of detomidine increased, indicating that detomidine is an useful adjunct to ketamine and guaifenesin. The dose sparing effect was maximum when detomidine was administered @ 30 μg/kg b.wt.
