EDUCATIONAL PACKAGES, RURAL ADOLESECENT GIRLS, HEALTHY CHILD BIRTH,

Description Adolescents are important resources of any country. According to the WHO Expert
Committee adolescence is defined as the period between 10 and 19 years, the second
decade of life. The term “adolescence” literally means “to emerge”, “to mature” or
“achieve identity”. It is a significant phase of transition from childhood to adulthood,
which is marked by physical changes accompanied by psychological changes.
Adolescence is bounded by the advent of puberty at the lower end and the capacity to
take on adult responsibilities at the upper end.
Adolescence is characterized by heightened emotionality & rapid change in
attitudes and behavior along with rapid physical changes like sexual maturity which
brings confusion among adolescents of their capacities & interests. In order to
effectively deal with this transition, they require information and a clear picture of their
bodily changes to prevent them from physical problems, guilt, ambiguity, and
confusion. Therefore, reproductive health of the young people is a growing concern
today and is considered a corner stone of health and a major determinant of human
social development. Considering the adolescent stage as a traumatic period, educational
centers, state bodies & family welfare centers resulted in the development of education
material for adolescent pregnant for healthy child birth and child care.
Education in particular is being increasingly recognized as an important input
for improving the health status of the population. In majority of the families, the mother
is the central figure and if she is aware of the basic concepts and principles of
pregnancy, child birth, nutrition, immunization & child care, it is likely that the health
needs of the entire family will be taken care of.
There is a strong need to focus on strategic measures to increase the use of
health care facilities. Emphasis should be given to the individualized education
packages (IEP) activities of National Health and Family Planning programme, so that
the community particularly, the adolescent pregnant become aware of the need for
xviii
regular antenatal health checkups and safe delivery and giving birth to a well healthy
nourished baby. As of new adolescent pregnancy issues are being addressed in
government program through the reproductive and child health program viewing them
as a future parent by making pregnancy so far for the youngest mothers & their babies
is a priority as they strive to meet targets for improving basic health care.
Adolescents tend to learn about family life from unreliable sources and in the
process pick up incorrect information. Many approaches have been used for imparting
education to the adolescent pregnant. Adolescent girls in Indian society, especially in
rural areas, are discriminated against and ignored in many aspects like health,
education, job opportunities/occupation. Hence we see high illiteracy rate.Hence there
is a need to strengthen the abilities of field level workers by developing suitable
educational packages and prepare them to deliver their services effectively. This helps
to equip the adolescent girls to face the pregnancy and child care effectively.
In this study suitable topics for educational package were selected to provide
adolescent girls with the opportunity to know about different issues related to healthy
child birth and better child care practices. The content was developed for 21 topics
under 4 different categories which include Adolescent related, pregnant women related,
Child care related and Parenting related. Altogether it was decided to cover 21 topics in
development of educational packages.
Content was developed for the selected topics in different steps. The first step was
obtaining the information by searching different sources. Second step was preparation
of script for the topics. Third step was the conversation of script in to regional language
Telugu as the educational package is intended to only in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh.
Next step was conversion of script into suitable educational aid. Depending on the
topics, content size different types of aids are selected which include Booklet, Leaflet,
Pamphlet, Bulletin, Burrahkatha, Chart, Card game, Folder, Skit, and Snake and Ladder

in terms of its content, pictures used, presentation style and overall appearance of the
aid. They were also asked to give their suggestions for improving the quality of the aid
in terms of its content, presentation style and pictures used.
