Description Agricultural finance is a sine-qua-non of
agricultural development. Farm credit plays a key role
in boosting up and stabilizing growth in a developing
country like India, especially · when it is accompanied
with improved production technology. In fact, with the
break-through in agricultural production as a result
of new strategies of agricultural development, farm
credit has become more productive than ever before.
The demand for credit will be conspicuous on all the
farms. The study is related to three categories of farmers
viz., small, medium and large and aimed at the
estimation of credit requirements under changing farm
technology in Medak district of Andhra Pradesh.
The main objectives of the study are:
i) To study the existing level and pattern of
capital structure in the three size groups
of farm firms i.e. small, medium and large,
ii) To evaluate the magnitude of credit utilization
and credit gap at the existing level
of technology,
iii) To assess the optimum credit needs of the
cultivators of different size groups of farms
with improved technology, and
iv) To test the economic feasibility of the borrowed
credit under the existing level and the
proposed credit for the improved farm situation.
The study was conducted in Nangunur and Dubbak
mandals of Medak district, Andhra Pradesh by selecting
72 farmers from six villages three under each mandal.
In each village four farmers at random were selected
under each of the three size groups viz., small (below
2 ha), medium (2.01 to 4.00 ha) and large (4.01 ha and
above) making a total of 12 farmers. Survey method was
adopted for the collection of data. Tabular and functio- ·
nal analysis were employed as analytical tools to fulfil
the objectives of the study.
From the study it is concluded that the cropping
intensity was low due to lack of adequate irrigation
facilities. The total value of fixed capital per hectare
increased with increase in farm size.
The cost of cultivation per hectare increased
with the increase in farm size. The per hectare total
human labour utilization and expenditure on traction
power related directly with farm size. Rental value
of owned land accounted for maximum per cent of the
total cost. The amount spent on manures and fertilizers
and plant protection under existing set up was less.
The credit borrowed per farm showed direct
relationship with the farm size while the per hectare
borrowed credit related inversely. Commercial banks
formed the major source of credit to medium and large
farms whereas money lenders dominated with respect to
small farms. The credit gap per farm showed direct relationship
with the farm size while the per hectare credit
gap related inversely. Significant influence of credit
on gross returns was noticed.
The production function analysis indicated
diminishing factor returns for all the variables included.
Constant returns to scale was noticed on all
the size groups. The marginal value product to factor
cost ratios indicated inefficient use of resources on
all the size groups of farms.
The cost of cultivation per hectare due to
introduction of a new technology in Typical Farm Plars
was more than that in the existing set up. There was
substantial increase in gross and net .returns and inputoutput
ratios due to introduction of new farm technology
indicating the profitability of introducing the new
farm production technology. The percentage increase
of credit needs due to introduction of new technology
was more on small farms.
The economic feasibility of farmers based
on returns criterion sounded well for all the size groups
of farms. The repaying capacity and risk bearing ability
improved considerably as a result of improved farm production
technology.
