Description |
Studies on survey of aquatic weeds, biology of Cyrtobagous salviniae and management of water fern was taken up during 2010 at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. Roving survey on aquatic weeds revealed that totally 15 different aquatic weeds were noticed in the surveyed districts among them four dominant invasive species were observed viz., Eichhornia crassipes (Martius) Solms-Laubach (Pontederiaceae), Salvinia molesta Mitchell, Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae) Ludwigia adscendens (L.) Hara (Onagraceae). These invasive weeds were also examined for damage by phytophagous insects. On water hyacinth, weevils (Neochetina eichhorniae Warner and N. bruchi Hustache,) and a mite (Orthogalumna terebrantis Wallwork) was observed. On S. molesta, the salvinia weevil, Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands was noticed. Spodoptera pectinicornis Hampson was found feeding on Pisia stratiotes and arresting the plant growth. On Ludwigia weed, both adults and grubs of Altica caerula Oliver and Sphinx moth, Theretra silhetensis Walker were found actively feeding and suppressing the weed. Studies on biology of C. salviniae revealed that incubation period was 8.2±1.09 days. The first, second and third instar larval period lasted for 9.2±1.095, 9.6±0.54 and 10.6±0.54 days, respectively. with total larval periods of 9.8 days. The pupal period lasted for 13.2±1.09 days and adult longevity of the weevils lasted for 15.2 weeks with food. For the magement of S. molesta, C. salvinae was released at various population density per square foot area. Out of which fifteen and twelve weevils were found highly effective in reducing the weed population within 125 days. Studies on aqueous extract of parthenium on water fern indicated that 100 and 75 per cent aqueous extracts were found effective in reducing the weed population within 17 days while reduced dosages failed to afford control. |
