Description |
The Present study entitled “Trend analysis of fertilizer consumption in relation to foodgrains in the districts of Krishna- Godavari River Basin of A.P” has been undertaken to evaluate the compound growth rates and to identify shifts in fertilizer consumption, total foodgrains area and total foodgrains production. The reference period was from 1979-80 to 2005-06 (27 years) and the study was confined to the Krishna- Godavari River Basin of A.P comprising of East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, and Guntur districts as well as state of A.P. as a whole. Trends in fertilizer consumption, total foodgrains area, total foodgrains production were identified by computing the compound growth rates. However, the time series data on these dependent variables exhibited a discontinuity over the study period. Hence, the growth in fertilizer consumption, area and production of total foodgrains was measured after identifying the years of discontinuity which lead to the formation of sub periods in the data. These years of discontinuity or shifts were identified by the graphical approach (control charts). An attempt had also been made to fit the trend equations to the fertilizer consumption, area and production of total foodgrains for the four selected districts and A.P state as a whole and the best fitting models were identified for forecasting the fertilizer demand. The study revealed that, the Nitrogen and Phosphate consumption registered considerable increase in all the selected districts and the state as a whole in the recent years. However, the growth rates revealed that, the growth in consumption of these two fertilizers is low in recent years. The potash consumption in Guntur district exhibited a decrease of 92.92 per cent in the recent years. The total NPK consumption recorded highest consumption in Krishna district with a mean consumption of 178411 tonnes. It is also revealed that, the total foodgrains area recorded a negative growth of 0.06 per cent in this district in recent years. This clearly indicated the decrease in total foodgrains area and increased area under commercial crops. The present status of the total foodgrains area in Andhra Pradesh state, though encouraging with respect to the average level, appears to be stagnant in respect of growth (-0.51%). The total foodgrains production recorded considerable increase in all the four selected districts and in A.P. state as a whole. The growth models were fitted to the fertilizer consumption, area and production of total foodgrains and the best fitted models for forecasting the fertilizer demand were identified based on significant Adj R2 and least Residual Mean Square (RMS). The study indicated that, the consumption of fertilizers is mainly associated with total foodgrains area which ultimately exhibited a significant relation with the total foodgrains production. |
