Description |
The study entitled, “Biomass production and vegetation analysis of Chilapatta Reserve Forest Ecosystem of West Bengal”, was conducted at Chilapatta Reserve Forest, Cooch Behar Wildlife Division during April 2007 to March 2009 to document the floristic, production and carbon storage status of the forest. Stratified random nested quadrat sampling method was adopted for analyzing the qualitative and quantitative character or phytosociology. The life forms were trees, shrubs, lianas, climbers, ferns, herbs, and epiphytes. A total of 100 species were very less present, 165 were less frequent and 46 were often present. All the shrubs, herbs, climbers and lianas were evergreen but mostly trees were deciduous. The species growing intermixed were only the trees (36.98 %), 23.47 % in patches, 23.15 % in colonies and 16.40 % grown singly. Medium/small leaf species dominated the forest while maximum species had membranous leaf. Most of the canopies were continuously covered. Overall intercepted PAR by the forest strata was more than 98 %. A total of 311 species of plants were recorded but 52 of these species could not be identified. The identified species were represented by 85 families and 167 genera. The number of species representing the trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers, lianas, and ferns were 160, 36, 49, 44, 4 and 19, respectively. |
