Description The present investigation entitled “Studies on mycoflora associated with
Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp) seeds” was carried out at the Department of
Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, IGKV, Raipur (C.G).
For seed health evaluation, six different methods were used, It was clear from
dry seed examination that no definite trend among the varieties of pigeonpea in the
proportion of healthy seeds and other seed parameters and also no concomitant
contamination were observed. In washing test, spores of Aspergillus flavus, A. niger,
A. fumigatus and hyphal strands of mycelia sterilia were detected from seed surfaces
of different pigeonpea varieties. In all, eight mycoflora( Aspergillus flavus, A. niger,
A. fumigatus, A. sp., Penicillium sp., Mucor sp., mycelia sterilia and Fusarium udum )
were detected by four incubation methods (standard blotter, agar plate, roll towel and
2, 4-D) in varying frequencies in different varieties and methods. Per efficiency wise,
2, 4-D method was found most efficient over other methods in detecting mycoflora.
Farmer’s variety harbour highest percentage of mycoflora in comparison to other
varieties by all four incubation methods. Different mycoflora detected in varying
frequencies in different incubation methods.
Mycoflora associated were found maximum on farmer’s variety resulting in
minimum seedling vigour index. Fungicidal treatment of pigeonpea seeds reduces the
frequency of seed born mycoflora and thereby increases the seedling vigour index.
There was increase in electrolyte leakage with the increase in storage period
after inoculation with seed borne mycoflora suggesting the definite role of seed borne
mycoflora on level of susceptibility of pigeonpea varieties.
