Description T-8629
The study was undertaken to examine the trends in sheep production in
Rajasthan. The compound growth rates were estimated by fitting exponential
function in time series data. The growth in sheep population in Rajasthan was
found to be positive between most of the livestock censuses except a few.
However, the growth in sheep population from census period 1997 to 2003 was
found to be negative in almost all the districts because of the severe drought in
2002-03. The temporary migration was found to be declining and permanent
migration was increasing with an overall increasing trend in sheep migration in
Rajasthan. Wool production also showed a declining trend. This declining trend
in the wool production was due to decrease in the sheep population. To minimise
the effect of drought on sheep production and to reverse the decreasing trend in
wool production, the effort should be made for effective and subsidised credit
through Kisan Credit Card and availability of fodder and feed during severe
drought and development of processing and marketing infrastructure
