Description The investigat:l.ons were carried out during 1988-89
at the Horticultural qarden of Sri Venkateswara Agricultural
College, Tirupati, to study the influence of different levels
of nitrogen, phosporus, potasium on tuberose Cv. Single and
to suggest a manurial schedule for tuberose for the sandy
loams of Chittoor district. Three levels of nitroge~ 200, 300
q
and -1 400 ~ ha , two levels each of phosphorus and potassium
( 100 and 2 00 kg ha -1 ) were tried in a randomized block design
with factorial concept with twelve treatmental combinations.
The soil wa~ low in organic carbon, medium in available phosphoru!'
l "nc'l pOti'ls:l ium.
Application of nitrogen increased both vegetative and
floral characters upto 300 ~ ha-1 • Further increase in nitrogen
to 400 kg ha-1 reduced the vegetative characters such as plant
height, leaf number, leaf area, number of side shoots and
number of bulbs. Similar reduction wns also noticed in floral
characters like number of spikes, spike length, rachis length,
number of flowers and f lo~er y.ield at 400 kg ha - 1 • Maximum
. 1 1
flower yield (12. 73 t ha- ) was recorded at 300 kg ha-:- nitrogen,
where the foliar concentration of nitrogen was also ~axi~lm.
Phosphorus application promoted both vegetative growth,
floral characters and yield of flowers. The vegetative characters
in terms of plant height, number of leaves, leaf ar~a,
number of bulbs, bulblets, and side shoots increased withQJv
increase in the dose of phosphorus from 100 to 200 ~ ha-1•
'Similar increase in floral characters like number of spikes,
spike length, rachis length, number of flowers and £fower
~ yield was observed with addition of phosphorus. Thus~highest
yield (10.34 t ha-1 ) was recorded at 200 kg ha-1•
Potassium application increased the growth parameters
like plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and bulb number
but did not influence the number of side shoots and bulblets
per clump. Among the various floral ch~racters>potnssium
improved the epike lenqth
