The present investigation was carried out to study the “Effect of different seed rate and cultivars on growth and yield of rice (Oryza sativa L.) under aerobic situation” during kharif season of 2013 at Agricultural Research Farm of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Four cultivars (PAC-837, DRRH-3, Sarjoo-52 and HUR-3022) and four seed rates (15 kg ha-1, 25 kg ha-1, 35 kg ha-1 and 45 kg ha-1) were tested in three replicat split plots design assigning cultivars in main plot and seed rates in sub plots. The soil of the experimental site represents Gangetic alluvial (Ustochrept) having sandy clay loam in texture with pH 7.2. It was moderate in fertility status with low in organic carbon (0.24%) and available nitrogen (202.50 kg ha-1), but medium in available phosphorus (25.60 kg ha-1) and available potassium (209.60 kg ha-1) as recorded before conducting field trials. A recommended dose of 120 kg N, 60 kg P2O5, 40 kg K2O ha-1 and 5.0 kg Zn were applied to rice crop. Growth parameter viz. plant height, number of tillers m-2 and dry matter accumulation by crop recorded maximum with hybrid cultivar PAC-837 at 25 kg ha-1 seed rate. Statistically no significant variation due to different variables were observed on some yield attributing charters like panicle length, number of filled grain panicle-1, sterility percentage and test weight. Seed rate for high yielding cultivars 35 kg ha-1 whereas for hybrid cultivars 25 kg ha-1 seed rate were observed to be optimum for realizing higher yield of aerobic rice. Grain yield in hybrid cultivar PAC-837 was found superior by producing yield 4.41 ton per hectare. Seed rate 25 kg ha-1 recorded better growth and yield attributing characters as compared to other rest of tested seed rate. The seed rate 15 kg ha-1, 25 kg ha-1, 35 kg ha-1 and 45 kg ha-1 contributed to yield 3.09, 4.22, 3.95 and 3.54 ton per hectare. On the basis of economic analysis, hybrid rice cultivar PAC-837 at 25 kg ha-1 seed rate recorded higher net return ( ) 61710.42 and B: C ratio 1.76. The maximum N, P, K uptake by grain and straw was recorded with hybrid rice cultivar PAC-837 at 25 kg ha-1 seed rate. On the basis of findings of one year experimentation it may be recommended that hybrid cultivar PAC-837 sown at 25 kg ha-1, whereas high yielding cultivar Sarjoo-52 sown at 35 kg ha-1 seed rate produced higher net return of aerobic rice in Varanasi region. However, to ascertain the findings field trial may be conducted for one more year. |
