Description nvestigations “Studies on root traits, antioxidant activity in relation to low
phosphorus supply in rice (Oryza sativa L.) genotypes” were conducted during Rabi
2011-2012 as solution culture experiment. The study involved six genotypes viz.,
IET 20716, IET 20710, IET 20744, IET 20894, MTU 1010 and SWARNA grown with
modified Hoagland solution with low phosphorus: 1.6 μM (LP) as well as normal
phosphorus: 200 μM (NP). Morphological, Physiological and biochemical parameters in
root and shoot were evaluated in the rice genotypes in response to phosphorus supply.
Low P supply strongly affected the shoot growth as well as number of tillers in
all rice genotypes. There was differential response in the genotypes in response to P
supplied. Plants grown with low P exhibited increase in the root length irrespective of
genotypes while other root traits (root volume, root weight) were decreased.
The genotype IET 20710 showed genotype differences in root length with
28.63cm plant-1 and susceptible IET 20894 with 19.73cm plant-1at 90 days. In terms of
root volume, SWARNA showed high genotype differences with 24.35 cm3plant-1 and
least by IET 20894 with 11.90 cm3plant-1 at 90 days. Among genotypes, SWARNA
gave high value at 90 days in root weight with genotype differences of 7.78 g plant-1,
whereas, IET 20744 gave less value with 3.21 g plant-1.
There was reduction in the physiological characters such as leaf area, SCMR,
photosynthetic rate and photochemical efficiency (ratio of Fv/Fm) with low P compared
to that with normal P. In leaf area measurement, IET 20710 showed with higher value at
90 days with 946.9 cm2plant-1 and IET 20744 low value with 469.9 cm2plant-1. Among
genotypes, IET 20710 had high SCMR value of genotypic mean with 44.56 and IET
20744 with 38.22. In terms of photosynthetic rate, the genotype IET 20710 showed with
high genotypic mean of 22.72  mol CO2m-2s-1 and IET 20894 with low value of
19.36  mol CO2m-2s-1. At 90 days, IET 20716 showed high genotypic mean of
photochemical efficiency with value 0.81, whereas, the genotype IET 20744 had low
photochemical efficiency with 0.76 value. Anatomically, there was a clear reduction in
the diameter of root of plants with low P supply.
In terms of biochemical parameters, under low phosphorus supply, there were
increases scavenging enzymes of reactive oxygen species viz., superoxide dismutase
(SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) in root as well as shoot. Higher values of
these antioxidant enzymes were observed with rice genotypes viz., IET 20710 (V1) and
SWARNA (V2) under low phosphorus supply. The malonyldialdehyde (MDA) content,
an indicative of oxidation stress, also increased under P stress condition and its value
were higher in IET 20744 (V5) and IET 20894 (V6) compared to other genotypes.
Results indicated rice genotypes viz., IET 20710, SWARNA and IET 20716 had
more shoot biomass and tiller development, higher values leaf area, high photosynthetic
rate and photochemical efficiency and higher anti-oxidant activity with reduced
oxidative injury (MDA content) in root and shoot under grown under low P indicative
of their tolerance to P deficiency. The root attributes such as root length, root volume,
root dry weight and higher root/shoot ratio in these genotypes also contributed to greater
adaptation to low P availability. In contrast, rice genotypes viz., IET 20744 and
IET 20894 exhibited reduction in all the above traits indicative of susceptibility.
