Description Entrepreneurship has now been recognized as a concept not only vital for
industries but also in the development of agriculture. Entrepreneurship stands as a
vehicle to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities and to
sustain a healthy economy and environment. By a simple definition, doing new things
or doing things that are already being done in a new way is a part of entrepreneurial
behaviour. The development of entrepreneurship has gained status of a national
movement not only for industrial development but also for its strength to solve the
problem of unemployment and upliftment of economically weaker sections of the
society.
A study on entrepreneurs of Vermicompost technology in Guntur district of
Andhra Pradesh was carried out during 2012. Respondents from each mandal in the
district had been randomly selected, thus making a total of 60 respondents and data was
collected by pre-testing followed by personal interview method.
The detailed analysis of profile of Vermicompost technology indicated that
majority of the respondents were middle aged, having graduation with business as their
main occupation, medium land holding and majority of them having experience of 3-6
years with the family size of less than 5 members, having received trainings of 1-2,
medium in social participation, economic orientation, market orientation,
innovativeness, risk orientation and achievement motivation.
The study revealed that majority of the entrepreneurs had medium Knowledge
and Attitude towards Vermicompost technology. The correlation analysis revealed that education, occupation, experience in
Vermicompost preparation, training received, economic orientation, market orientation,
innovativeness, risk orientation and achievement motivation were positively correlated,
age and landholding were not related, family size and social participation were not
related correlated with Knowledge of Vermicompost entrepreneurs. All the variables
together contributed 84.02 per cent towards knowledge of vermicompost technology.
The correlation analysis revealed that education, occupation, experience in
Vermicompost preparation, training received, economic orientation, market orientation,
innovativeness, risk orientation and achievement motivation were positively correlated,
landholding was not related. Age, family size and social participation were not
correlated with Attitude of Vermicompost entrepreneurs. All the variables together
contributed 72.14 per cent towards Attitude of vermicompost technology.
Successful caselets of Vermicompost entrepreneurs reflected that the
entrepreneurs orientation with the variables such as knowledge levels, favourable
attitude, education, risk orientation, innovativeness, experience were significantly
contributed to become an entrepreneur.
Main constraints faced by the vermicompost entrepreneurs include, lack of
awareness regarding improved methods of vermicompost practices, labour availability,
adequate quantity of FYM/ compost is not available, lack of remunerative prices for the
produce, attack by pests, lack of knowledge on market information, inadequate transport
facilities, high cost of initial investment, lack of demand for the product in the market,
inadequate marketing facilities, inadequate training facilities, complex process of
obtaining loan/ finance, credit is not available at proper time and difficulty in procuring
earthworms.
Important suggestions were, trainings should be given by the Agricultural
department and Horticultural department regarding all aspects of the recommended
practices of the Vermicompost technology and the units should be under regular
guidance. Provide employment to MGNREGA beneficiaries, only during the off-season
under the scheme, and cost of production and the initial investment should be reduced
by more subsidizing them. The financial organization should make their loan
sanctioning system flexible to suit the entrepreneurs and the process should be simple.
Marketing and transport facilities through well structured roads should be
improved, detail information on export market, adequate and timely credit should be
made available through banks and awareness and knowledge should be given through
one or two day campaigns by the concerned departments.
