Description |
The present study entitled with “Effect of carbon dioxide and insecticides against Angoumois grain moth Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) in maize” was conducted at Seed Research and Technology Centre (S.R.T.C), Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, Telangana during February 2015 to September 2015. The effect of different concentrations of CO2 viz., 20, 40, 60 and 80 per cent against the Angoumois grain moth Sitotroga cerealella in maize seed stored for a period of six months was observed. The results revealed that the percentage of seed damage was found to be nil in 60 and 80 per cent concentrations of CO2 up to six months of storage. Exposure of seeds at 20 and 40 per cent CO2 concentrations could able to protect the seed from infestation and development of the moth up to four months of treatment but the infestation and progeny development were noticed after five months of treatment. Higher CO2 concentrations viz., 60 and 80 per cent not only protected the seed from infestation and development but also maintained good germination and seedling vigour index even after six months of treatment. The suitability of four types of packing material viz., gunny bag ,cloth bag, super grain bag and HDPE bag used for storing of maize seeds for a period of six months of storage against Sitotroga cerealella was assessed based on fecundity, percentage of damaged seeds, germination, moisture content and seedling vigour index. The results revealed that super grain bag was found to be superior followed by HDPE bag, followed by gunny bag and followed by cloth bag. Super grain maintained good germination and seedling vigour index and it also protected the seed completely against S. cerealella up to six months. The effect of six different insecticides used as a fabric treatment in gunny bags against S. cerealella in maize for a period of six months of storage revealed that deltamethrin @ 3.5 ml/l was found to be superior to all other treatments protecting the seeds completely up to six months of storage with zero fecundity, nil adult emergence, zero per cent insect damage, no weight loss, highest seed germination and high seedling vigour index up to six months of storage. Residual toxicity of the six different insecticides used for fabric treatment showed that deltamethrin @ 3.5 ml/l gave a good residual protection to maize seeds against S. cerealella up to a period of six months. The insecticide treatments showed no adverse effect on germination, moisture content and seedling vigour index |
