Description |
A field experiment was undertaken to study Heterosis and combining ability studies on yield and quality parameters in okra [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench] with the objectives of identifying the general combining ability of parents and specific combining ability of crosses and to assess the magnitude of heterosis for yield and yield related components, to assess interrelationship among the different economic traits and to study about inbreeding depression for yield component and fruit quality traits. The experiment was conducted at the Vegetable Research Farm, Department of Horticulture, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, during the summer and rainy, 20012; and summer seasons of 2013. The salient features of the experimental findings are summarized below. Thirty-six crosses were developed by crossing twelve females as lines with three males as testers following Line x Tester design. All the crosses were evaluated along with the parents and one check (Larm-1) in Randomized Block Design with three replications. Variance due to parents and crosses were significant for the entire yield and yield related components. Combining ability (line × tester) analysis revealed higher magnitude of sca variance for all the characters studied indicating preponderance of non-additive components of genetic variance. The lines like IC-140927, Pusa Makhmali, SEL.-4, IC-43742 and testers like HRB-55 (Hissar Unnat) prove to be the good general combiner and SA-29 × Varsha Uphar, VRO-6 × Varsha Uphar and IC-43742 × Hissar Unnat are the good specific combiner for most of the yield and yield attributing traits. The hybrids like IC-43742 × Hissar Unnat, IC-140927 × Hissar Unnat and IC-43742 × Hissar Unnat shows highly significant effect over average heterosis; IC-140927 × Hissar Unnat, Pusa Makhmali × VRO-5 and IC-43742 × Hissar Unnat shows highly significant effect over heterobeltiosis and IC-140927 × Hissar Unnat, SA-29 × Varsha Uphar and IC-43742 × Hissar Unnat shows highest positive significant heterosis over standard check (Larm-1) for most of the yield and yield attributing traits in okra. The inbreeding depression is negatively significant that is a desirable quality trait were observed in IC- 85814× Varsha Uphar followed by VRO-3 × Varsha Uphar and Kashi Kranti × Varsha Uphar for most of the yield and yield attributing traits in okra. Correlation coefficient and path coefficient were found in positive direction for yield and yield attributing traits and on the basis of this we can easily detect the traits that are much important for yield and yield attributing traits.
