Description |
Emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae) belong to ratite family which includes other flightless birds such as Ostrich, Rhea, Cassowary and Kiwi. Ostrich and Emu are not aggressive towards people and are reared commercially for meat, leather and oil. In India Emu farming was first started in Andhra Pradesh in 1996. In Tamil Nadu Emu research unit was established at Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Regional Research Centre, Pudukottai in 2004 to study the productive and reproductive performance and to explore emu farming for commercial purpose. Factors affecting normal rate of growth of emu chick includes feed quality, social grouping, diseases, management practices and genetics (Deeming et al. 1993, Jarvis 1998). In this study the growth performance of emu chicks was recorded and presented.
