Description A field experiment entitled “Effect of spacing and fertilizers on growth, yield and seed quality of okra”,
conducted during spring summer season of 2013 at Research Farm of Department of Vegetable Science, CCS
Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. It comprised of 3 spacings, 3 fertilizer levels and 2 varieties of okra in
split-split plot design with three replications. The main objectives were to work out the suitable spacing and
fertilizer level for okra production during summer season and to study the effect of different spacing and fertilizer
levels on seed quality in okra.
Growth parameters of okra crop were significantly affected by spacing, fertilizer and varieties.
Maximum height of plants were observed in 30 x 5 cm spacing with fertilizer application of 187.5 kg N + 75kg
P2O5 + 60 kg K2O per hectare in variety HBT-49-1. However, numbers of branches were highest in variety Hisar
Unnat.
Yield attributes like first fruiting node earliest, intermodal length, fruit length and diameter etc. were
highest in variety HBT-49-1 resulting in highest fruit yield (q/ha) in spacing 30 cm x 10 cm with the application of
187.5 kg N +75 kg P2O5 + 60 kg K2O per hectare. The seed yield attributes and yield was significantly affected by
spacing, fertilizer and varieties. Overall, variety HBT-49-1 at fertilizer level 187.5 kg N +75 kg P2O5 + 60 kg K2O
per hectare resulted in highest seed yield.
Highest seed germination and tetrazolium test were achieved in variety Hisar Unnat at spacing 30 cm x
15 cm with the fertilizer levels of 187.5 kg N + 75 kg P2O5 + 60 kg K2O per hectare. The highest seedling length
and dry weight, seed vigour index-I and II were achieved with the same spacing and fertilizers levels in variety
Hisar Unnat. Wider spacing of 30 cm x 15 cm significantly produced higher seedling dry weight, seed vigour
index-1 and II, highest number of viable seed percentage with the interaction of fertilizer dose 25% and 50%
higher recommended doses of N and P +50 kg K in Hisar Unnat and HBT-49-1.
Finally, spacing 30 cm x 10 cm resulted in higher growth parameters except plant height, yield attributes
and seed yield improving seed attributes with the application of 187.5 kg N +75 kg P2O5 + 60 kg K2O in variety
HBT-49-1 of okra. However, the seed yield and seed quality was found better in variety Hisar Unnat with the
application of 187.5 kg N + 75 kg P2O5 + 60 kg K2O per hectare.
