Description India ranks second in the world raw silk production. Karnataka produces more than 60
percent of total silk production in the country. Grainages are the vital centers of silkworm
seed production. Marketing of DFLs is the major constraint in the grainage enterprise.
Analysis of Captive Market for Silkworm Seeds in Kolar district is made on the components
of terms of contracts, pattern of supply, pricing and purchasers satisfaction. Private and
government grainages of Kolar, Shidlaghatta and Chintamani taluks were selected and
primary data were collected from 30 private and five government grainages for the period of
25 years to evaluate costs, returns and marketing of DFLs, are studied using the different
analytical tools like tabular, break-even and ratio analysis. The number of grainages in
private sector was 533 and 71 in case of government sector. The prices of DFLs were
increased in both the sectors. The production of DFLs in private sector over took that of the
government sector. This is because of the increased demand for the quality DFLs. The cost of
production of DFLs was higher in case of government sector as compared to private sector
because of high installed capacity of grainages in government sector. The private grainages
have been functioning efficiently with well-established cliental relationship, market driven
strategies for sale DFLs and quality seed production. The essence of any commercial venture
is to earn higher profit with minimum investment, so also is true for grainage enterprise
naturally, all grainages either private or government is required to work on the motto of
making profit. The operation of captive market will reduce the cost of production of DFLs
and avoid risk involved in marketing of DFLs.
