Description The Present study entitled “Comparitive performance of different
trend models in relation to crops of Guntur District” has been undertaken
to estimate the growth rates of the selected important crops viz., Paddy,
Chillies, Cotton, Tobacco and to fit the adequate trend equations for the future
projections by 2020 AD.
The reference period of study was from 1970 to 2011 and the study was
carried for Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh.
Linear and Compound growth rates were calculated to examine the trends
in area, production and productivity of selected agricultural crops. Ten growth
models viz., linear, logarithmic, inverse, quadratic, cubic, compound, power,
s-curve, growth and exponential were fitted to the area, production and
productivity of selected crops and the best-fitted model for future projection
was chosen based upon least Residual Mean Sum of Square (RMSS) and
significant Adjusted R2.
The study revealed that the production and productivity of Paddy marked
a significant increasing trend during the study period (1970-2011) whereas the
area exhibited stationary trend. But projections of Paddy production and
productivity showed a decreasing trend. Chilli also showed a significant
increasing trend in area, production and productivity during 1970-2011.
Projections of Chillies area, production and productivity also exhibited a
significant increasing trend. In case of Cotton, there was an increasing trend
followed by slight decreasing trend in area during the study period and there
was an increasing trend in production during study period where the
projections of area by 2020 AD showed a decreasing trend and productivity
exhibited an increasing trend during 1970 to 2020. It was observed that area
and production of Tobacco was decreasing during the study period and
increasing during 2012 to 2020 where as Tobacco productivity was increasing
from 1970 to 2020.
