Description T-8610
Magnetopriming of chickpea seeds (Pusa 1053 and Pusa 256) with 100mT (1h) static magnetic field, improved rate of germination, length of root and shoot and vigour indices under salt stress. Salinity level of 40 mM NaCl and above caused a significant decrease in the germination characteristics. Rate of germination was significantly enhanced under salinity in magnetoprimed seeds of Pusa 1053 compared to Pusa 256. Also, seedling growth parameters (root and shoot length and vigour indices) indicated that magnetopriming was more effective in alleviating salinity stress at early seedling stage in Pusa 1053 compared to Pusa 256. Our results showed that magnetopriming of dry seeds can be effectively used as a pre-sowing treatment for mitigating adverse effects of salinity at the germination stage.
