Description t-8789
Thirty nine isolates of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceris causal agent of
chickpea (Cicer arietinum) wilt collected from the different parts of India
representing eight races of the pathogen were used for the classification based on
vegetative compatibility grouping (VCG). Three hundred and seventy nine (75.9%)
nitrate non utilizing mutants generated on 2.5 % potassium chlorate medium were
further divided into three classes, namely, nit1(73.3%), nit3(15.6%), and nitM (9.5%)
based on utilization of various nitrogen sources. Nit mutants were paired to determine
compatibility by varying degree of heterokaryon formation. Self incompatibility was
observed in more than 50 % of the isolates. The isolates included in the present study
were observed to be belonged to a single VCG (0280). Thus, in spite of variability in
the virulence, the Indian population of the pathogen has only one VCG.
