Description Mushrooms, being rich source of therapeutic and nutritional substances have received
considerable attention for their antioxidant potential. In the present studyfruit body as well as
mycelial biomass of Volvariella volvacea and Calocybe indicawere investigated for 1,1diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl
(DPPH) radical scavenging activity, ferric reducing antioxidant
power (FRAP) and Total Phenolic content (TPC)usingethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, hexane,
water and mixture of ethanol and water (50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10) extracts.C.
indicafruit body recorded maximum DPPH scavenging activity (61.19%) followed by V.
volvacea(60.16%)using ethyl acetate as a solvent. V. volvaceaextracts showed maximum
DPPH radical scavenging activities than C. indica extracts.Analysis of antioxidant content of
the extracts showed that total phenolics were abundant inC. indica and V. volvaceawith
4.88µgm/mg and 4.3 µgm/mg in mixture of ethanol and water (70:30). Mycelial as well as
biomass extracts of C. indica showed more total phenolic content than V. volvacea.FRAP
value was maximum in V. volvacea and C. indica fruit body giving 247.19 µgm/mg and
268.12µgm/mg. Different ratios of ethanol and water (50:50, 60:40, 70:30, 80:20 and 90:10)
showed more antioxidant power as compared to ethanol and water. The free radical
scavenging activity and antioxidant characteristics of the extract may be due to the presence
of polyphenols in the extract.Three month storage of mycelial biomass of both the
mushrooms resulted in decline of antioxidant activities of bothV. volvacea and C. indica.
