Description Oilseed crops occupy a predominant place in an Indian economy
next to food grains. Sunflower and Groundnut crops are the major
oilseed crops in India. In this study, an attempt made to develop to
develop appropriate statistical growth models with a view to provide
analytical approach to describe trends in area, production and
productivity of Sunflower and Groundnut crops in Karnataka.
The study was based on secondary data on area, production and
productivity of Sunflower and Groundnut crops for the period of 20 years
(1991-2010). Attempts have been made using six statistical growth
models for area, production and productivity of Sunflower and
Groundnut crops i.e Monomolecular, Logistic, Gompertz, Richards and
Weibull models and Linear models.
The parameters of selected model were estimated using Levenberg-
Marquardt (LM) iterative method. The main assumptions of
‘independence’ and ‘normality’ of error terms were examined by using
respectively the ‘Run-test’ and ‘Shapiro-Wilk test’. The best model was
selected based on the performance of selected model adequacy test
criteria viz. MAE, RMSE, MAPE and R2 value. Results revealed that for
area, production and productivity for Sunflower crop Gompertz,
Monomolecular and Richards model respectively were found to be best
fit. Further, area, production and productivity for Groundnut crop
Monomolecular, Linear and Logistic model respectively were found to be
best fit. By using these best fitted models area, production and
productivity of Sunflower and Groundnut crops were forecasted for next
5 years (2011-2015).
