Description The present study investigated the incidence of vision and hearing problems, learning disability
and low intellectual abilities among academically poor rural class-VI school children. It also
investigated the teachers‟ perception regarding reasons of poor performance and congruencedissonance
between perceived and actual reasons. The perception of the teachers (n=55) of these
students was also studied. Thus, the present study consisted of a total sample size of 100 children
and 55 school teachers. Socio-economic status scale (Bharadwaj 2001), Raven‟s Standard
Progressive Matrices Test (1960), Diagnostic Test of Learning Disability (Swarup and Mehta
2005), Self-Structured Hearing Assessment Checklist, Self-structured Teacher Perception
Proforma and Snellen chart were used to assess various aspects of the study. The results revealed
that 41 per cent of the academically poor children had weak vision whereas, majority had normal
hearing abilities. Intellectual abilities of majority of children were found below average.
Prevalence of learning disability was found to be 11.90 per cent. Low socio-economic status was
found significantly and positively related with extreme academic backwardness. Low IQ, less
parental education and economic backwardness were perceived as most important reasons for
academic backwardness among children by the teachers. Significant dissonance was found in the
perceived and actual number of children with poor, weak and normal vision whereas, no
significant congruence or dissonance was observed between the perceived and actual number of
students with average or below average intellectual ability and with or without learning disability.
