Description ABSTRACT
The present investigation entitled “Effect of rejuvenation pruning and nitrogen
levels on growth, yield and quality of apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) cv. New Castle” was
carried out during 2011 and 2012 in the experimental orchard of the Department of Fruit
Science, Dr. Y S Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan (H. P.). The
experiment was laid out using Randomized Block Design consisting of 10 treatment
combinations including three pruning intensities (Heading back of scaffolds 20, 40 and 60%)
and three levels of nitrogen (500, 625 and 750g) along with control (Heading back at
secondary branches level+500g Nitrogen), on uniformly 25- years old apricot trees. The
growth parameters annual shoot growth, pruning wood weight and leaf area including foliar
nutrient content viz. N, Fe and Mn were maximum in treatment T9 (60% heading back of
scaffolds+750g Nitrogen), whereas P, K, Ca, Mg and Cu content showed a declining trend
with increasing pruning intensity and N levels. Among various physico-chemical
characteristics fruit firmness, TSS, total sugars, reducing and non-reducing sugars, acidity,
fruit volume and fruit weight were found to be significantly higher with treatment T7 (60%
heading back of scaffolds+500g Nitrogen) than all other treatments combination.
