Description A field experiment entitled “Balanced nutrient management in cotton (G.Cot.Hy-8) under limited irrigation conditions” was conducted at Cotton Research Station, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh on clayey soil during two consecutive years of Kharif 2005 and 2006.
The experiment comprising twenty four treatment combinations was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The main plot treatments consisted of four irrigation scheduling viz., irrigation at 0.6 IW/CPE ratio (I1), irrigation at 0.8 IW/CPE ratio (I2), irrigation at 0.6 IW/CPE ratio in alternate row space (I3) and irrigation at 0.8 IW/CPE ratio in alternate row space (I4) while sub plot treatments consisted of six fertilizer management practices viz., 160 kg N/ha (F1), 120 kg N/ha + 8 t FYM /ha (F2), 120 kg N/ha + 2 t Vermicompost /ha (F3), 120 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha (F4), 80 kg N/ha + 1 t
Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha (F5) and 80 kg N/ha + 16 t FYM/ha (F6). Cotton variety G.Cot.Hy-8 was tested in the experiment.
The results of the experiment indicated that irrigating the cotton crop with all furrows at 0.8 IW/CPE and 0.6 IW/CPE being statistically at par, significantly enhanced plant growth parameters viz., plant height and plant spread while irrigating the cotton crop with all furrows at 0.8 IW/CPE significantly improved number of sympodial branches per plant.
Irrigating the cotton crop with all furrows at 0.8 IW/CPE and 0.6 IW/CPE were found equivalent in improving yield attributes viz., number of squares per plant at 150 DAS and number of green bolls per plant at 120 DAS while irrigating the cotton crop with all furrows at 0.8 IW/CPE found efficient in improving number of green bolls per plant at 150 DAS, number of open bolls per plant and boll weight. Ginning percentage and lint index remained unaffected due to irrigation scheduling.
Irrigating the cotton crop with all furrows at 0.8 IW/CPE resulted in significantly higher seed cotton yield of 2489 kg/ha and stalk yield of 6127 kg/ha while irrigating the cotton crop with all furrows at 0.8 IW/CPE and 0.6 IW/CPE have almost equivalent response to lint yield of cotton.
Cotton fibre characters viz., mean fibre length (mm), fibre fineness (mv) and fibre strength (g/text) remained unaffected due to irrigation scheduling.
Chemical analysis of plant indicated that uptake of nutrients (N, P and K) were significantly higher under irrigating the crop with all furrows at 0.8 IW/CPE over rest of the treatments. The availability of N, P and K in soil after harvest of crop was not affected by irrigation scheduling.
Soil moisture studies indicated that the highest water saving and water use efficiency were obtained under alternate furrow irrigation at 0.6 IW/CPE.
Maximum net return (Rs. 25474/ha) and B:C ratio (1.69) were obtained with irrigation in all furrows at 0.8 IW/CPE, closely followed by irrigation in all furrows at 0.6 IW/CPE.
The application of 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha and 120 kg N/ha +8 t FYM/ha were found equally effective and significantly enhanced plant growth in terms of plant height and plant spread while application of 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha was found effective in promoting number of sympodial branches per plant.
The application of 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha significantly augmented the yield attributes like number of squares per plant, number of green bolls per plant, number of open bolls per plant and boll weight. The application of 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha, 120 kg N/ha +8 t FYM/ha and 120 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha were found equally effective for improving ginning percentage and lint index.
Fertilizing the crop with 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha recorded significantly the higher seed cotton yield of 2426 kg/ha, lint yield of 912 kg/ha and stalk yields of 6743 kg/ha.
Nutrient management practices were failed to impose their significant influence on fibre characters like, mean fibre length (mm), fibre fineness (mv) and fibre strength (g/text).
Application of 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha significantly increased N, P and K uptake by cotton plant.
Availability of nutrients like N and P in soil after harvest of crop was found effective with application of 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha but the availability of K in soil remained unaffected due to nutrient management practices.
The water use efficiency was significantly recorded the higher under application of 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha followed by application of 120 kg N/ha +8 t FYM/ha.
The highest net realization of Rs. 23246 was obtained with application of 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha while the highest B:C ratio of 1.64 obtained under application of 120 kg N/ha +8 t FYM/ha.
In nut shell, it could be concluded from the two years field study that for getting maximum seed cotton production and economic return from kharif cotton, the crop should be irrigated in all furrows at 0.8 IW/CPE ratio and fertilized with application of 80 kg N/ha + 1 t Castor cake/ha + 8 t FYM/ha.
