Description |
Seeds are the most important, basic and vital input for agricultural production. Apart from fertilizer, pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, and other agricultural inputs, these should of best quality to obtain quality produce and higher yields. The present study is a field oriented project to understand the varietals rice market and to find out trigger for hybridization. The other objectives of the study are: To know about the paddy varieties grown by the farmers and also about their attributes. To know about the awareness levels among farmers regarding hybrid rice. To know the attributes of ideal paddy variety that the farmers are inclined to cultivate. To know the attributes of ideal paddy hybrid that the farmers are inclined to cultivate. To know about the key barriers for growing hybrid rice by the farmers. To know, which is the effective channel/ media vehicle to promote hybrid rice. 3 Hybrid rice enables farmers to achieve significant yield improvements over open-pollinated or inbred varieties. Hybrid rice combines the positive qualities of both parents. Rice hybrids have the potential to yield 15-35% more than the best inbred variety grown in similar conditions. Hybrid rice has also proven to be more hardy in adverse growing conditions, especially in unfavourable soil and climate conditions- such as temporary drought stress. Producing hybrid rice seed is a costly process that requires considerable manpower and inputs, which explains why hybrid seed tends to be more expensive than inbred seed. However, hybrid rice cultivation requires less seed per hectare than inbred lines. In practice, the higher seed price per Kg is more than compensated by lower seed planting density and higher yield, making hybrid rice seed a very profitable choice for farmers. Primary data was collected from farmers and dealers through personal interview method with the help of pre-tested questionnaire. Farmer’s questionnaire includes questions related to varieties grown by the farmers, awareness about hybrid rice, ideal rice variety, farmers expectations from hybrid rice and whose advice farmers trust the most while making a purchasing decision related to an agriinput. Dealer’s questionnaire includes questions related to total paddy varieties sales during 2005-2006, varieties sold in maximum quantities during 2005-2006 and reasons for those varieties to be sold in maximum quantities, problems faced by the farmers, reasons for not selling hybrid rice by the dealers, important criterion for farmers while making a purchase decision for rice seed, farmers expectations from an ideal rice hybrid and suggestions to improve the market penetration of hybrid rice in the region. The analysis of the data was done by applying appropriate statistical tools like percentage, frequency and rankings. In the course of the study undertaken in the districts of East Godavari, West Godavari and Krishna districts it was found that most of the farmers want varieties and rice hybrids resistant to pest and diseases and there is an immense market potential for hybrid rice in these regions. The reason being, the farmers are not satisfied with the existing rice varieties which are prone to pests and diseases, resulting in high cost of cultivation and low yields. The main striking point in the entire study is the very low awareness among the farmers about hybrid rice. Farmers don’t know about hybrid rice and were misinterpreting the existing rice varieties to be hybrid rice. The main reason for this low awareness about hybrid rice in these regions is due to lack of 4 extensive promotional activities on the usage of hybrid rice by the government agencies and private companies, and also due to lack of proper hybrids suitable to the local conditions (such as soil, climate etc) .Even the PHB71 hybrid, of Pioneer Seeds Company, grown by some farmers is actually recommended for Telangana and Rayalaseema areas. Hybrid rice, though less, is being grown in few pockets of Telangana and Rayalaseema and the strategies implemented for promoting hybrid rice in the above regions could be extrapolated in Krishna, East and West Godavari districts. The study also revealed that farmers give high importance to the fellow farmers’ advice while making a purchase decision regarding seeds. Most of the dealers expressed that the main reason for not selling hybrid rice seed is due lack of demand for it and that farmers want a variety that is resistant to pests and diseases, and that farmers expect a rice hybrid with fine grain quality. They also expressed that market penetration of hybrid rice can be improved through improving the market for hybrid rice by developing paddy hybrids with fine grain quality. The important suggestions that were given after analysis of the results are that Proagro Seeds Company should work in co-ordination with the government and should also use various promotional tools like demonstrations, free seed samples etc to create awareness about hybrid rice among farmers and to develop market for hybrid rice in the sampled area. |
