Subject Studies on Incidence, Risk Factors and Diagnostic Techniques for Post Partum Endometritis in Crossbred Cows

Description PG Thesis
One hundred and sixty four dairy cows were examined between 20 to 30 days postpartum
for the evidence of endometritis and to compare the efficacy of diagnostic techniques
such as history, physical examination, vaginoscopic examination, transrectal palpation,
transrectal ultrasonography and uterine cytology. In animals with endometritis, attempt
was also made to identify the association of risk factors viz., body condition score, age,
parity, milk yield and periparturient abnormalities with postpartum endometritis. As per
history 12.8 percent of the animals were investigated with the evidence of postpartum
endometritis. However, purulent discharges were identified during the course of clinical
examination on the tail, perenium or external genetalia emphasizing that animals with
endometritis would be missed if one were to depend on the history by the animal
attendant alone. The number of animals identified with postpartum endometritis
increased when vaginoscopic examination was carried out. However, transrectal
palpation identified less number of animals. The use of transrectal ultrasonography only
marginally improved the number of animals as endometritis when compared to
vaginoscopic examination. Uterine cytology technique identified 72 out of 164 animals
and appeared to be the best technique for the diagnosis of endometritis. The present
study also revealed that the body condition score had no relationship with the incidence
of dystocia. Postpartum endometritis was diagnosed more frequently in animals under the
age of four years, following first parity and in animals yielding less than 10 liters per day.
There was a strong association between assisted calving and retention of placenta with
the incidence of endometritis in dairy cattle.
