Description Mango is the most important fruit in the export sector. India is the leading
producer of mango in the world. In India, Andhra Pradesh is one of the major mango
cultivating states with an area of 4.59 lakh hectares. Indian mangoes have extensive
demand all over the world. Some of the countries, which import fresh mangoes from
India are Australia, Bangladesh, UAE, USA, France, Netherlands, Kuwait, Saudi
Arabia etc. In view of good demand for mangoes in the export sector and keeping the
export behavior of mango growers a study entitled “An Analytical study on the
mango export farmers in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh” was planned and
organised.
The study analyses the selected characteristics of mango export farmers,
knowledge and adoption status of farmers, relationship between selected
characteristics of mango export farmers and their knowledge and adoption status,
factors influencing the export of mango and production and marketing problems.
Exploratory research design was adopted for the study. Andhra Pradesh state
was selected purposively. The study was undertaken in four mandals of Krishna
district viz., Vissannapet, Reddigudem, Nuzividu and Agiripalli. From each selected
mandal, 30 mango export farmers were selected following simple random sampling
technique. Thus a total of 120 farmers were selected for the study. All the
Government (6) and Non Government (6) officials concerned with the mango export
in the district were also selected. A structured interview schedule was developed
based on the objectives of the study. Then the data were collected, processed and
subjected to appropriate statistical tests for analysis.
Majority of the mango export farmers had high education level, more than half
of the farmers had large landholdings, less than half of the farmers had medium
farming experience and little less than three fourth of the farmers had low experience
in mango export. The total quantity of mango exported was 14,606 tonnes from 2002-
03 to 2006-07 and an average quantity of 24.34 tonnes was exported during the said
period. More than ninety per cent of the farmers had medium availability of resources.
Majority of the farmers received financial support. More than seventy per cent of the
farmers had high risk taking ability and scientific orientation.
About sixty one per cent of the mango export farmers had high knowledge on
mango production and export technologies. Eighty per cent of the farmers had rich
knowledge on recommended spacing, recommended variety for export, plant material
selection and planting, pruning, protocols for bearing orchard and canopy
management whereas less than twenty per cent of the farmers had knowledge on
cleaning of fruits, storage, hot water treatment and packing.
Nearly sixty three per cent of the mango export farmers had high adoption
status on mango production and export technologies. Majority of mango export
farmers adopted the practices namely; enhancement of flowering and fruitfulness,
plantation of recommended variety for export, plant material selection and planting,
recommended spacing, canopy management, whereas low adoption status was
observed in case of post harvest practices such as cleaning of fruits, hot water
treatment and packing.
Selected characteristics such as education, experience in mango export,
support from exporter enterprises, access to information, training received and
scientific orientation had shown a positive and significant relationship with the
knowledge and adoption status of mango export farmers.
The factors namely, self interest in the export of mango, higher income,
inspiration from fellow farmers, technical support from horticulture scientists,
influence by horticultural officers influenced the farmers to takeup the export of
mango. Whereas interest of the farmer, government priorities, higher returns to the
farmer, chances for external exposure, pressure from higher authorities etc. were the
important factors that influence the exports as per the perception of the extension
officials.
Majority of the farmers and extension officials expressed problems such as
failure of crop due to adverse weather conditions, problem of sooty mould, thrips,
lack of knowledge on improved post harvest technologies and high labour wages etc.,
in the production and export of mango. Non payment of remunerative price to the
farmers, involvement of middlemen, delayed payments, lack of infrastructure
facilities, lack of knowledge on procedures of export, absence of backward linkages,
lack of knowledge on packing technology and lack of technical know how on
shipment export etc. were the marketing problems faced by the mango export farmers.
Appropriate Technological strategies like canopy management, integrated
nutrient management, integrated disease management, harvesting at right time and
post harvest technologies such as hot water treatment, grading and maintenance of
storage temperature, Administrative strategies like timely supply of horticultural
inputs, adequate subsidy on infrastructure, ensuring better co-ordination between
horticulture department, export agencies, marketing department and research stations,
Marketing and export strategies such as provision of infrastructure facilities, provision
of market information and ensuring transparency in marketing, Extension strategies
such as training on mango export technologies, field trips to the farmers and extension
functionaries, exhibitions, joint work shop for farmers, scientists, export agents and
extension personnel and adoption of export villages concept etc. are emphasized in
promotion of mango exports in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh.
