Description M. Sc. (Ag.)
A field experiment entitled “Evaluation of carbon sequestration potential of different land use systems” was carried out at RGSC, BHU, Barkachha, Mirzapur districts of Uttar Pradesh during 2014-2015. The experiment was carried out through 2 experiments. The first one was conducted in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 11 treatments (land use system) and 3 replications, while the second trial was a factorial experiment laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with 2 factors and 3 replications. For conducting the experiment different land use systems of agriculture farm at RGSC were selected. The data was recorded on above ground biomass of all the land use systems. Crop, shrubs and grass biomass was estimated by using 1x1 m2spacing. Crop and fruit yield of trees were either determined on unit area basis. Litter biomass was measured in 1x1 m2 plot size. Soil attributes viz., bulk density, organic carbon were also determined and these were used for preparing the carbon pool inventory and soil organic carbon density. These soil samples were taken from 0- 15 cm and 15-30 cm soil depth.
On the basis of above, it can be concluded that at RGSC, BHU, Barkachha, Mirzapur, fruit based land use systems viz., custard, amla, guava, bael based agri-horti system and karonda based hortipasture system are not only biologically productive but has more carbon density, CO2sequestration potential, net profit, higher benefit:cost and total benefits than field crops based system. On the other hand, from the carbon mitigation potential and economic point of view land use systems, need to be promoted over the traditional field crops based land use system for realizing better monetary return and environmental benefits.
