Abstract Fifty genotypes of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) were evaluated to estimate genetic variability, heritability and genetic gain among quality and physico-chemical traits. Significant genetic variability was observed among the genotypes under study. ICCV 03102 has recorded the highest raffinose, stachyose and total sugars content while sucrose was highest in FLIP 85-17C. Protein content was recorded highest in Pusa 1053. Maximum weight was recorded in PG 0515 and plant yield was recorded in Pusa 1105. High heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance as per cent mean was observed for hydration capacity, swelling capacity, swelling index, and 100-seed weight. Raffinose and stachyose (flatulence causing oligosaccharides commonly known as RFOs (raffinose family oligosaccharides) though had high heritability but genetic gain was low indicating greater influence of environmental factors on these traits. Grain yield per plant showed low heritability indicating greater influence of environment on yield. |
