Description The present investigations
Center (S.R.T.C), Rajendranagar,
2011-2012 to study the “Effect of
with new insecticide molecules
pigeonpea.”
were conducted at Seed Research and Technology
Hyderabad, in Seed Entomology laboratory during
modified atmosphere with CO 2 and fabric treatment
against Callosobruchus chinensis (L.) in stored
The effect of modified atmosphere with CO2 against C. chinensis was studied
by directly exposing the C. chinensis adults to six concentrations of CO2 viz., 5, 10, 20,
40, 60 and 80% with five exposure periods of 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 min to study the
adult mortality and subsequent progeny development from the CO 2 exposed and
survived adults. The results indicated that 60 and 80% CO2 concentrations caused
complete mortality of adults even at one day after treatment and at 40% CO 2
concentration though some of the adults survived for one or two days they did not lay
eggs and thus 40% and above CO2 concentrations were found to be fatal for the
development of C. chinensis.
The effect of modified atmosphere with CO2 was also tested by exposing
bruchid infested pigeonpea seeds to four different concentrations viz., 20, 40, 60 and
80% and their effect on seed infestation, development of the bruchid and seed quality
parameters upto six months of storage was studied. The results stated that exposure of
seeds to 20% CO2 concentration could able to protect the seed from infestation and
development of the bruchid up to four months of treatment but the infestation and
progeny development were noticed after five months of treatment. Higher CO2
concentrations viz., 40%, 60% and 80% not only protected the seed from bruchid
infestation and development but also maintained good germination and seedling vigour
index even after six months of treatment.
Fabric treatment studies conducted with gunny bags and cloth bags with four
newer insecticides viz., spinosad, flubendiamide, emamectin benzoate and
chlorantraniliprole along with chemical check deltamethrin showed the superior
performance of all the newer insecticides on par with deltamethrin except
chlorantraniliprole in controlling the seed infestation and further multiplication of the
pest up to six months of treatment. The newer insecticides showed no adverse effect on
germination, moisture content and seedling vigour.
