Description Specialization in agricultural production facilitates achieving cost
minimization, thereby enabling profit maximization. Growing
international competition and innovation in production have necessitated
intensive and efficient use of inputs. The present study is undertaken
with the objective of analyzing the growth in key parameters and
international competitiveness of major field crops in Karnataka, apart
from assessing the pattern of convergence in per capita agricultural
income. Exponential growth model, convergence analysis, policy analysis
matrix and allocative efficiency were employed for the purpose. The study
revealed that the yield levels of most field crops, have taken downward
path over the years (1990 to 2007). Except paddy in NDZ and NEDZ and
sunflower in some zones, other crops mostly had non-significant or
negative yield growth. District real per capita agricultural income
exhibited disparities across districts. Karnataka state had comparative
advantage for the rainfed crops like groundnut (0.66), greengram (0.73),
bengalgram (0.89) and soyabean (0.95) as revealed by NPC. Rice
production had the highest comparative advantage with NPC, DRC and
EPC values of 0.57, 0.33 and 0.4, respectively. Though maize is
extensively cultivated, its production is found to be non-competitive.
Sugar production is also not competitive due to its high domestic price.
Labour shortage, raising wages, lengthy loan procedures, ineffective
MSP, non-availability of seeds & fertilizers and high fertilizer prices were
the major constraints faced by farmers across the crops. The growing
popularity of maize but with negative yield growth calls for research
efforts at increasing yields and popularizing scientific production
practices. Since there are disparities in terms of agricultural income,
identifying and promoting most competitive enterprises in each of the
zones can enable in achieving balanced regional growth of the state.
