Description The study of academic achievement of students
is of great significance, as the efficiency or
deficiency of a student is chiefly determined bi the
quality of his academic achievement. The entire effort
of education is towards improving the academic performance
of pupils. Academic achievement is not an unidimensional
function, but multidimensional. For a lony
time researchers and educationists have only been
concerned with the cognitive correlates of achievement.
But more recently they have come to recognize the
affective correlates also that influence academic performance.
It has been established that adequate social
and cultural environment is an essential prerequisite
for normal intellectual development of the child. With
the progressive growth of research in education it was
clear that all causes of studen~s failure in academic
pursuit are not always traceable to the school itself.
In fact in one complete year a high school student
spends in the school only about 12 per cent of the
total time of the year. The rest 88 per cent bein~
spent mostly in home and partly in various other
places. ~he influence of the home in some cases
satisfactorily consolidate and in some other cases
seriously inhibit the progress made in school. Mother is the prime teacher of the child. The
way in which the child was brought up, will shape up
his personality which inturn may influence the academic
performance of the child. So it is essential to study
the maternal disciplinary practices and their impact on
academic achievement of the children. Alony with the
maternal disciplinary practices the yeneral socio
economic variables of the family i.e educational level
of parents, occupation of father and income of the
family were also studied to verify their impact on
academic achievement of the child.
From the review collected it was felt that
very limited research has been conducted in the field
of ''The impact·of maternal disciplinary practices on
academic achievement of adolescents, therefore a need
was felt to conduct the present study. The objectives
of the study were to find out the different disciplinary
practices fcllowed by the mothers and the yeneral
socio economic conditions of the family and also to
unearth ~n association between maternal disciplinary
practices, SES variables and academic achievement of
the adolescents. The sample constituted 180 rural adolescents from
Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh who were studying
8th, 9th and lOth classes in zillaparishad schools and
were in the age range of 13-16 years. The overall
percentage of the two previous annual examinations
marks of the adolescents who were studying 8th, 9th and
lOth class was taken as a criterion to classify them
into 3 groups as high, (>60) moderate (40-60) and low
