Description |
The genetic parameters for ten quantitative characters were estimated in 15 genotypes of bush type cowpea at Horticultural Research Station (OUAT), Bhubaneswar under All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Vegetable crops, following randomized block design during year 2012 (July-November). The genotypes such as 2011/COPBVAR-7, 2011/COPBVAR-4, 2012/COPBVAR-1, 2011/COPBVAR-6 and Kashi Kanchan are identified as the best to be grown in Bhubaneswar condition. The differences among all the genotypes were statistically significant for all the ten quantitative characters. High estimates of genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV), heritability (broad sense) and genetic advance were observed for the characters such as plant height, pod length, number of pods per plant, edible pod yield per plant as well as edible pod yield per ha, suggesting additive gene action for expression of these characters. Thus selection based on these characters will be effective in improvement of the bush type cowpea. It is also suggested from the correlation studies that there were a good deal of association among yield and and its various attributes. Number of branches per plant, pod length, pod girth, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per plant are the important correlated characters contributing towards pod yield in bush type cowpea.
