Description |
A total of 17 mesenchymal tumours in dogs comprised three cases of melanoma, two fibromatous epulids, one fibrosarcomatous epulis, five fibromas, two osteosarcoma and one each lipoma, myxoma, leiomyoma, and liposarcoma out of 65 tumour suspected cases. Cellularity was high in fibrosarcoma and melanomas, moderate in liposarcoma and low in others. In fibroma, individual spindle shaped cells with indistinct borders had oval and elongated nucleus with distinct single nucleolus. Chromatin was finely stippled. The cytology smear from lipoma revealed clumps of cells with vacuolated cytoplasm. Nucleus was flattened and pushed to the periphery. Myxoma showed individual stellate to spindle shaped cells with indistinct cell borders and basoeosinophilic or mucinous background. Nucleus was eccentric and ovoid. Binucleation was also observed. Chromatin was finely stippled. In leiomyoma, uniform spindle shaped individual cells were observed. Nucleus was oval to elongated or cigar- shaped and had one to two indistinct nucleoli with fine chromatin with trailing cytoplasm. In melanoma, cytoplasm had brown, black to bluish staining pigments. Osteosarcomas revealed large round cells with irregular borders, anisocytosis, anisokaryosis, projected out nucleus, multiple nucleoli, mitotic figures, multinucleated cells and coarse chromatin. The cytoplasm was basophilic and had pink staining substances. In liposarcoma, roughly round cells occurring in clumps and some spindle cells with central oval nuclei were noticed.. There were also giant cells. Nuclei were large, round or spherical and pushed to the periphery. Some showed indentations. Nucleoli were 1 to 2 and basophilic. Chromatin was coarse and granular. Cytoplasm showed vacuoles of various sizes. Based on the findings, an algorithm was developed for cytological diagnosis. |
