Description India is the world’s largest producer, consumer and importer of pulses.
The objectives of the study were analyzing the supply, demand, price
behavior and forecasting. The required data was collected from secondary
sources for supply and demand at the national level for red gram and
bengal gram. Two markets each from Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka
were chosen for price related studies. The highest positive growth rates
for demand were observed in red gram (54.80%) and bengal gram
(24.00%). The prices of red gram in Gulbarga market were highest during
July to November and lowest during December to June. The prices of red
gram in Bhopal market were highest during February to August and
lowest during September to November. The prices of bengal gram in
Narasingpur market were highest during August to November and lowest
during January to May. The prices of bengal gram in Gadag market were
highest during June to November and lowest during December to May.
The forecasted short fall in supply for red gram and bengal gram by 2030
would be 38.48 million tonnes and 11.89 million tonnes respectively. The
forecasted highest price for red gram of Rs. 4435 per quintal was
indicated in the month of June, 2014 in Gulbarga Market and Rs. 3134
per quintal for bengal gram in Narasingpur market in the month of
November, 2013. Farmers can avail the pledge loan to avoid distress
sales. The Govt. should gear up to address the scarcity situation
projected.
