Description Pre-harvest contracting in mango is in existence in Karnataka from the ancient
times. The contractors involved in pre-harvest contracting possessed rich experience as
they inherited the trade from their ancestors. They acquired knowledge and expertise to
minimize risk in mango marketing and earns profit. An attempt has been made in this
study to analyze the economics of mango contracting in southern Karnataka by collecting
information from 60 randomly selected respondent contractors, 15 each from Ramanagar
and Magadi taluks of Ramanagar district and Srinivaspur and Mulabagal taluks of Kolar
district. The results of study revealed (73.33%) contractors were taking up mainly two
year contract. On farm price was fixed through negotiation between farmer and
contractor. To the price discovery, price received by the contractor and distance from
orchard to market significantly inferring. Between the 2 districts both production and
price risks were more in Ramanagar region. In the overall study area the maintenance
cost of mango orchard was Rs.37,775/acre/annum. The payment made to the farmer was
Rs. 15,787/acre/annum and Rs.10,813/acre/annum for single variety and mixed variety
orchards, respectively. The average income realized was Rs.81,743/acre/annum this
indicates that contractors with minimizing risks obtain a huge amount of profit.
Contractors sold 88.66 per cent of harvested mango produce in wholesale mandies
(APMCs), followed by 4.25% to pulp factories. Extreme climatic conditions flowering
and fruit bearing stage, lack of laborers and finance and alternate bearing varieties of
mango were the major constraints of the contractors in study area.
