Description The tribal people belong to the bottom of the social and economic hierarchy.
Majority of the tribal people live under poverty with low education status. The tribal
children are the most vulnerable group due to poverty and lack of parental education
they face multiple deprivations such as lack of stimulation, nutrition, immunization, as
well as water and sanitation. The first few years of life were considered to be the most
important developmental phase of a person’s life. Optimal development in terms of
physical, social/emotional, cognitive and language domains are vital for children’s
immediate and long-term health and wellbeing. The experience that happens to
children in their early years strongly influences a range of physical health issues, as
well as their mental health, learning capabilities particularly relating to literacy and
numeracy and participation in the work force (Halfon and Hochstein, 2002; Irwin et
al, 2007; National Crime Prevention, 1999). The present study was taken up to provide
stimulating activities to infants and toddlers. With this theoretical knowledge the
present study was taken up with the objective to implement and analyze the impact of
Anandam intervention programme in tribal infants.
A sample of 60 infants in age group of birth to one year were randomly
selected and were pretested in cognitive, language and motor areas of development
using Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development (BSID) third version. Then
they were given Anandam intervention programme for three months along with parent
education and counselling. The infants were again post tested using Bayley Scales of
Infant and Toddler Development (BSID) third version. The score were converted two
composite scores and data was analyzed using frequency, percentage and t test. The
results revealed that early intervention using stimulation kit and parent educational
programmes had tremendous impact on developmental status of infants.
