Description The present study was conducted on ketotic cows in and around Bikaner in the year 2015-16. The prevalence of the disease was 13.14 per cent. The prevalence was higher in 6 to 9 years of age, in 3rd and 4th parity, 0 to 2 months of postpartum and during winter months particularly in November, December and January. The major clinical manifestations were abrupt and marked decrease in milk yield, refusal to take concentrate mixture, reduced feed intake, dullness, grinding of teeth, salivation, absence of rumination, constipation, mucous coated feces and acetone like odour in urine, loss of elasticity of skin and loss of body condition. Body temperature, pulse and respiration rate were in normal range in both A (insulin nondependent) and B (insulin dependent) groups. Ruminal movements and milk yield per day were significantly (p < 0.01) decreased in both groups. The disease was mainly characterized by hypoglycemia and protienemia with ketonaemia and ketonuria. The major findings of biochemical study were significant increase in serum triglyceride, total serum cholesterol, free cholesterol, serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and serum β-hydroxy butyric acid (BHBA) in both groups. The serum insulin level was significantly decreased in group B and serum Cortisol level was significantly decreased in group A. Among Biomarkers parameters, Cholesterol ester and Lecithin Cholesterol Acyl Transferase enzyme activity were significantly lower in both groups. The above parameters almost attained normalcy after treatment in both groups.
